Soybean Diseases 07/20/04 5:13:40 PM

Start watching soybean fields for the potential disease pressure of Sudden Death Syndrome. With many of the early planted beans now in the R2 through R4 stage and because of the excellent growing conditions, the potential for SDS is present. Bacterial Blight is still showing up in some fields and if we continue to receive timely rains, it may continue to move up on the newer leaves. Septoria Brown Spot can still be found on the lower leaves of the bean plants. So far, it still seems to be confined to the lower leaves and is not yet much of an issue. Another disease to watch for is Cercospora Blight. This disease shows up mainly on the upper leaves. A few soybean aphids have shown up in Northeast Missouri. Continued mild temperatures may increase the possibility of a problem with aphids.
Local note: We are taking a hard look at a new soybean fungicide treatment this year. Quadris, when combined with the insecticide Warrior has shown some excellent yield responses in soybeans. We'll keep an eye on it.
